The Workshops
Improvisation and Devising New Work. These workshops are experimental and movement based (drawing on the Lecoq tradition of physical theatre) aiming to trigger the performer’s individual energy and inspiration sources and their connections to space, fellow performers and a sense of ‘play’. There will be an emphasis on ‘freeing up’ creativity to enable new work to emerge – encouraging the individual’s intuitive responses - and on improvisational structures which utilise the kinaesthetic awareness of body, space and impulse. The workshop offers structures and stimuli to help the performer explore new possibilities and patterns of devising in order to create both solo and/ or group works. · Please wear loose comfortable clothing · Bring 2 images/ photos/ items (eg A4 photocopy) that inspire and/ or intrigue you. · Bring a poem, short story or monologue that you feel strongly about
Playwriting / Directing / Theatre-making Workshop In this writing, directing and theatre making workshop were going to look at some of the basic elements that go into making good narrative and non narrative theatre including; plot, character, dialogue/subtext, movement, sound, music, scene, juxtaposition, arc, image, irony, song and maybe even some puppetry. There will be time to talk and ask questions and we'll be using improvisation as a starting point to create a story with which we will explore the above elements and see how each works. You'll need to come willing to act when needed and to improvise to help the creative process along. With this in mind please wear comfortable clothes you can move around in and bring a water bottle. Also could you please bring the following: 1 x roll of masking tape (2 - 3 cm thick) 1 x Newspaper (broadsheet better than tabloid but either will do) 1 x notebook and pen/pencils If you like you can also bring along any theatre piece you're working on but remember, two hours isn't long so we won't have time to discuss anything you bring in detail. Finally make sure you bring your sense of humour and adventure. Creating good theatre is first and foremost about using our imaginations and to do that effectively we've got to have some fun.
Creating Choreography
The aim of the workshops is to teach emerging artists how to devise material and discover movement, moving away from taught choreography.
This workshop will focus on ways to generate and compose movement based material. Working in groups, trios, duos and individually we will learn a multitude of tools and methods to create movement material. We will discover ways to utilize space, proximity and distance to create meaning and relationships with our surroundings and other people. Please wear comfortable clothing which allows a full-range of movement. Bring a long-sleeved t-shirt, pen and notepad, drink bottle and an open mind.
Live Art
The aim of the workshops is to teach emerging artists about the Live Art genre and the basics in terms of how to create this type of work.
The workshops will be an introduction to performance-making with an emphasis on improvising both physically and vocally.
Participants will generate their own material individually and in small groups.
Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring with them a short piece of text (no longer than 100 words).
